What size will my image be from this transparency?
Will I have to crop?
Most film/transparencies we scan are in one
of three standard proportions: 4X5 inches, 6X7 centimeters or
35mm (a 2X3 proportion). Since they are different, a full-frame
(uncropped) print from your image might not fit the proportion
of a standard print size you have in mind. Most of the standard
sizes are based on the proportions of medium-format film. For
instance, a 4X5 transparency, printed full frame, can yield
an 8”X10” print, but a full-frame 10-inch print from a 35mm
transparency will actually be about 6.7”X10.”
At Laser Light, we print your images full-frame
unless you specify a crop. When we do a full-frame print from
a 35mm slide, we generally set the long dimension to the print
size requested, and let the short dimension fall.
If you want the image measurements to be exact
(say, to fit a pre-cut mat or frame), you must indicate how
you want us to crop the image. You can mark your preferred
crop on a guide print, or on the sleeve or tracing paper that
you send with your transparency (please provide clues for proper
alignment). Alternatively, you can let us make a full-frame
proof, then mark your crop and return the proof to us. If you
need an exact size, and there is not much to crop or you don’t
mind a little distortion, we can also stretch the image digitally
to fit your exact dimensions.
We price our photographic
prints based on the long dimension of standard sizes. If
you request a specific, non-standard size, we can print that
for you; you will be charged the same as for the next standard
size up. (Note that we have special pricing
for panoramic prints.)
The tables below show you the proportions for
full-frame prints from the most common transparency/film sizes.
Note that medium-format film sizes (6X7 and 4X5) are shown as
the same proportion. This is due to the nature of the film:
the size description refers to the entire sheet of film, but
the actual area exposed depends on your camera’s film carrier,
and is generally in about a 4X5 ratio.
These tables will help you to know in advance
what size your full-frame print will be, or give you an estimate
on how much you’ll need to crop to get the image size you want.
Sizes marked in blue are standard sizes that are full-frame
for that size transparency. The image sizes under “Full-frame
Prints” are the size you can expect if no crop is specified.
The dimensions and crop amounts in red give an indication of
how much image you will have to crop to achieve the exact size.
All dimensions are in inches.

*This is our standard print when a customer
requests a 30X40, and it is charged as such. We can crop down
from a 32X40 size image and/or digitally stretch the long dimension
to provide a full 30X40 at the 30X40 cost.
